Mr. & Mrs. Jack O’ Light-ern

A client dropped off these two old light fixtures; they were screaming to become Jack-O-Lanterns. I dusted off them off and traced their faces onto vinyl. Next, I stuck on their eyes, nose, and mouth (or mustache). Voila! A cute Jack-O-Lantern couple! A quick and easy way to up-cyle old...

Hands of Clay

I have started a new ministry at our church for teen girls, using art as our missional medium. Our last meeting was a different, more reflective get together. This means that while we weren’t slinging paint, we were still elbow-deep in creativity…just in a sitting position. It was Palm Sunday, and a time to reflect…a time to mold and shape just what the week ahead held for our faith…in fact it held the very basis of Christianity…of why we believe. there is something so calming about squishing clay between your fingers…molding and shaping until something appears…smooshing down, pressing , rolling…all to retry again  It made me reflect upon what I am being shaped into…how I can be pressed down to smooth rough edges, or reshaped in a different way, and how I resist…not wanting to move in the direction I am being molded. As the girls were read the Easter Story, I hoped that the action of the clay would cause the same reflection I was experiencing…Of the cross, of our path, of becoming beautiful in the Potter’s hands. Do you want to feel the clay squishing between your fingers…want to gather your kiddos into the kitchen and laugh and play in the mess? Tell them the stories of how they are being molded…how their actions and decisions mold those around them…how life is good, and fun, and hard…but good change is always possible… Dive in…Here is the easiest air dry clay recipe using goodies around the house: (makes about 2 pounds – the recipe can be halved). 2 cups baking soda 1 cup cornstarch 1.5 cups cold water...

Cute & Easy Burlap Tags

Looking for a cute and easy burlap tag for my kitchen baskets…I happened upon this cute, super easy (even better than cute ) way to make burlap tags while working on another project in the studio. You will need: 1.small pieces of burlap ( a great way to use up those scraps left over from those other cute interest projects you are making! 2. Decopage Glue 3.Foam brush, scissors, hole punch, ribbon 4. a plastic surface (I had some acrylic sheets in the studio- but any flat plastic will work) 5. paint & brush for numbers  Lay the burlap onto of the plastic and coat thoroughly with Decopage glue and foam brush, making sure it is on front and back and goes all the way to the edges of your piece of burlap. Let dry thoroughly, then peel away from plastic… Determine the shape of your tags and use the scissors to cut out. (I used square…but let your mind run: circle, oval, etc.) DO not worry about fraying. The glue has sealed the woven surface, so you get a nice straight line without fraying…   Use a hole punch to create the hole at the top…insert ribbon of your choice… Paint on number, initial, label etc using acrylic craft paint….if you want a guide, print out a favorite font from your computer and use as such… Let dry…then tie on & enjoy! Watch for lots of awesome burlap parties coming up in the next few weeks in the studio…helps & hints will be in the next newsletter, so sign up & get connected with a spot to express...
